This Day in Submarine History

9 September 1943 – While on its 8th war patrol the USS Grayling (SS 209) left Freemantle for the Philippines. It sunk the passenger-cargo ship Meizan Maru on 27 August. On 9 September the Japanese passenger-cargo ship Houkan Maro reported spotting a submarine in shallow water off  Luzon and ran over the area and noted making an impact with a submerged object. Grayling was scheduled to make a radio report on September 12th but did not transmit. At the end of the month the Navy officially listed Grayling as all hands lost.
