This Day in Submarine History

30 August 1740 – Birthday of David Bushnell of Westbrook, Connecticut. Inventor of the ‘Turtle’ the first submarine to be used in combat. Like J.P. Holland, inventor of the first practical submarine, he was originally a teacher, but while studying at Yale in 1775, he came up with the idea of submarine to attack British shipping. It introduced both the screw propellor and the use of water ballast to control depth.
