This day in Submarine History

March 6, 1953 USS Tunny The submarine Tunny (SSG-282), a recipient of two Presidential Unit Citations in World War Two, begins a new phase in its life when it’s refitted on this day to launch the Regulus surface-to-surface missile. Tunny successfully conducted the first test firing of a Regulus on 15 July of that year. The SSG 282 continues on patrols until 1965, thereafter it was converted into a troop-carrying submarine. Tunny then received five battle stars for carrying out unconventional operations before being decommissioned in 1969.
