9 February 1960 USS Sargo (SSN 583) Passed under the North Pole after a transit from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Finding a thin spot in the ice 25 feet from the pole it surfaced and raised a Hawaiian flag. The next day Sargo submerged and proceeded to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, rendezvousing with Ice Island T-3. Sargo conducted tests with scientists on the ice island and at the conclusion of the cooperative tests set course for the Bering Strait, the Aleutians and returned to Hawaii in early March. Sargo cruised over 6,000 miles under the ice mapping waters and the physiography of the Arctic Basin including deep water areas on the western edge of the Northwest Passage, earning Sargo the Navy Unit Commendation.
