THIS DAY IN SUBMARINE HISTORY

JULY

1 July 1975 The end of an Era.  USS Tiru (SS 416) named for the “Tiru” a member of the Lizardfish family, was the last of the World War Two design of the Balao class and subsequently was the last submarine of that World War II vintage design to be decommissioned by the U.S. Navy. Of course, this was in part because Tiru was the last of the Balao class commissioned as it wasn’t launched until September of 1947. At the time she was decommissioned Tiru was the oldest submarine in the U.S. Navy. NOTE the three ‘fins’ of the ‘PUFFS’ Sonar – Passive Underwater Fire Control Feasibility System.
