This day in Boat History

6 December 1953 – USS Albacore (AGSS 569) was commissioned. Albacore was the first research submarine with a modern tear drop shaped hull. Wind tunnel designed the hull shape emphasized speed and maneuverability. After decommissioning in 1980 Albacore was moved back to Portsmouth, New Hampshire where it remains on permanent display. Photo shows model of the Albacore hull that was used for testing.
