On Friday May 2nd shipmates of the Hawkbill Base USSVI (Subvets of East Idaho) gathered at Idaho Brewing Company to welcome the latest batch of canned SPUD Beer. Named by the crew of the USS Idaho the acronym stands for Special Purpose Underwater Drink. The two pallets of beer pictured will make it out to shelfs for Memorial Day.
This represents the third production of this beer which began as an idea prior to commissioning in 2023. When members of what would become the committee to produce a beer honoring the Idaho heard that a previous submarine (the Iowa) had a beer custom made the group coalesced into an ad hoc Committee of like-minded individuals. This included Jenni Garren of TEC distributing, Leon Wolfram and Robin Van Horn of Idaho Brewing and representatives of the SubVets of East Idaho, including Ross Carroll, Lisa and Gregg Smith, and Russell Johnson. Together they solicited both cash grants and donation of raw materials to produce a beer made with all-Idaho Ingredients, brewed by an Idaho Brewer, who was also a Subvet, at an Idaho Brewery and canned with Idaho Subvets on the production line. The result is the Session style Pale Ale. All proceeds derived from sale of this beer will benefit the crew of the USS Idaho.
