

New Submarine Name Announced
On Monday, January 13th, the Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, announced the name selected for the newest Columbia Class boat, SSBN 828. Scheduled for delivery in 2032 it will be named to honor the ‘Submarine Capital of the World’ GROTON, Conn. Three previous Navy ships have been named Groton, a frigate serving from 1944 to 1946, a Patrol Craft from ’45 to ’60 and an SSN 1978 – 1997. The new USS Groton will be the third vessel in the Columbia Class. Ats part of the announcement Secretary Del Toro named Cynthia M. Blumenthal, wife of Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, as Sponsor for the future USS Groton. Senator Blumenthal said of Groton, “It is a proud community of hard workers, veterans, patriots, and public servants, and this honor celebrates them.”
