

On Saturday September 20th, Members of Hawkbill Base joined the American Legion and VFW in Arco, at the Science Center and Sail, to honor the memory of recently passed, Richard Dean. A Navy veteran of World War Two, the 98-year-old Dean was instrumental in the construction and development of the ARCO Science center. The Science Center is also the home of the SSN 666 Hawkbill Sail, namesake of Subvets of East Idaho USSVI Base. After construction Richard remained a member of the Science center board, which recently competed a refurbishment of the facility and added a new restroom. Richard was born February 19, 1927 in Freeport, Illinois. After High School he enlisted, serving in both the Coast Guard and US Navy in World War Two and was awarded a Purple Heart. Following the War Richard worked at Rocky Flats and then moved to Idaho in 1974, for 25 additional years at the INL. Richard continued service as a member of the Arco City Council, American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge. Richard Dean Passed away on August 19th.
