Eternal Patrol

USS Swordfish (SS-193) departed Pearl Harbor on her thirteenth War Patrol on 22 December 1944. After topping off at Midway Swordfish sailed to near Okinawa where it was to conduct photographic reconnaissance. After acknowledging orders Swordfish was not heard from again. USS Kete (SS 369) did report making radar contact with a submarine it believed was Swordfish on January 12th and later heard explosions in that general area. Japanese War records do not seem to indicate an attack which might have sunk Swordfish, it is more likely the result of a minefield. Swordfish was near Yaku Island off-Kyushu, Japan. Prior to her final War Patrol Swordfish sank 21 enemy vessels, she was awarded eight battle stars and 3 Navy Unit Commendations.  BM2 Fremont Petty (pictured above) was from Weiser, Idaho
