Eternal Patrol

Edwin Frederick Bergman RM 3  – October 25, 1944 – USS Tang (SS 306) While attacking targets on the surface in the Formosa Strait, a circular run of its own torpedo struck the aft torpedo room. Of the nine officers and men on the bridge, including O’Kane, three were able to swim through the night until picked up eight hours later. One additional officer escaped the conning tower and was rescued with the others. Tang sank and bottomed out at 180 feet. Thirteen men in the forward torpedo room used Momsen lungs to escape of these only five were rescued. Seventy-Eight died. Survivors were beaten by their captors, eventually transfer to a POW camp. O’Kane survived the war and was awarded the Medal of Honor. Edwin Bergman, who did not survive was from Twin Falls, Idaho
