While on a routine patrol in Manila Bay, Philippines, a recently overhauled engine ignited gasoline fumes resulting in an explosion and fire. After battling the blaze, the CO, LTjg Arnold Marcus ordered the crew topside and into boats as he attempted to beach the ship. Marcus and six of the crew succumbed to their injuries the next day. Jacobs was the last remaining member of the crew to pass away on August – First was Arthur M Jacobs FA – August 1, 1917 SS 8 – was from – Blackfoot, Idaho
