This Day in Submarine History

7 April 1979 – USS Ohio (SSBN-726), the first Trident class submarine was launched on this day in Groton, CT at General Dynamics Electric Boat. Ohio, the 17th State, had three previous ships so named and SSBN 726 was the lead ship in her class of nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarines. She was later converted to a guided missile submarine and was re-designated with hull number SSGN-726. In this configuration Ohio could carry up to One Hundred Fifty-Four Cruise missles, each with a range of up to 1,500 miles.
