9 December 1941 – USS Swordfish (SS-193) in port in Manila on December 7th, got underway the next day on her first War Patrol. Off the coast of Hainan, China she made the initial U.S. submarine attack on a Japanese ship on this date, damaging the target. That first attack was followed with other damaging attacks on the 11th and 14th and on the 16th Swordfish sank her first vessel of the war, the Kashii Maru which was hit amidships by one of three torpedoes fired.
