This Day in Submarine History

24 November 1968, The USS Dolphin (AGSS 555) The specially built Dolphin with a cylindrical pressure hull, hemispherical Heads on each end and no free flood area became the deepest diving submarine on this date. Dolphin achieved a depth of 3,000 feet which at the time was classified. Originally built at PNSY Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and initially serving on the East Coast, Dolphin later transited the Panama Canal and was stationed in San Diego. Today Dolphin is a museum ship at San Diego’s Maritime Museum.
