USS Nautilus (SSN 571) was commissioned on 30 September 1954 In Groton, CT with Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson Commanding. Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear powered submarine. After commissioning, Nautilus underwent testing for the next several months. Finally, on 17 January 1955, she was underway on nuclear power.
