Long Before USS George Washington - SSBN 598

15 July 1953 – USS Tunny (SSG 282) Makes the first successful launch of a Regulus 1 guided missile. Tunny represented the first ever deterrent missile boats. Manned by a single crew, the average patrol was 68 days. In all, the ‘G’ boats, all diesel powered, conducted 42 deterrent patrols over a 6-year period from 1958 – 1964.
