Beryl Glyde Osborn CS3- April 3, 1943 – USS Pickerel (SS-177) Off Honshu, Japan. Pickerel left Pearl and subsequently topped off for fuel at Midway on 22 March ’43 and then headed for the assigned patrol area. Pickerel was never heard from again. No clear cause of the loss was determined. Post war Japanese record search indicated several possible actions that might have claimed Pickerel between 3 April and sometime after 7 April as there were several other ASW actions in that area and Pickerel was the only boat known near that location. Pickerel was the first submarine to be lost in the Central Pacific area. Pickerel was stricken from the Naval Registry on 19 August 1943. Beryl Osborn was from Boise, Idaho
