25 August 1960 – USS Seadragon (SSN 584) becomes the 3rd submarine to surface at the North Pole. Then makes history as the first to engage in a most unlikely activity. After surfacing they immediately fashioned a baseball field with the pitcher’s mound on the North Pole. In a contest of the ‘Old guys’ (Officers and Chiefs) against the enlisted ratings a game commenced in which the captain claimed to have hit a fly ball at 4 p.m. on Wednesday that wasn’t caught until 4 a.m. on Thursday (thanks to the international date line bisecting the field). The enlisted team is reported to have claimed victory by a score that was reported as 9 to 6.
