

Max Merrell Wicklander MM2 – May 4, 1945 USS Lagarto (SS-371) Built in Manitowoc Shipbuilding in Wisconsin, Lagarto was launched on May28, 1944. Transported down the Mississippi via the Illinois River, Lagarto departed New Orleans on 12 November 1944. Transiting the Panama Canal in December, she reached Pearl on Christmas Day, 1944. Lagarot subsequently entered her first patrol area on February 11, 1945. After a refit in Subic Bay Lagarto departed for Patrol on 12 April 1945. Contacting an enemy convoy Lagarto rendezvoused with USS Baya (SS 318) and planned how to attack. Baya proceeded and sent several messages to Lagarto that went unanswered. Following the War Japanese files recorded an attack by Minelayer Katsutaka made against a submarine. In May 2005 a dive team located the wreck in the Gulf of Thailand with a rupture on the port bow suggesting a depth charge, after a review of photographs the Navy confirmed it as the Lagarto.
