

27 January On this day in 1900, Hyman G. Rickover, father of the Nuclear Navy, was born in Makow, Russia (now Poland). His family emigrated to the United States in 1906. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served on active duty with the United States Navy for more than 63 years, his tenure in uniform a result of exemptions that stayed his retirement because of his critical service in the building of the country’s nuclear submarine and surface force. Rickover passed away in Arlington, Virginia, on July 8, 1986 and was buried in Section 5 at Arlington National Cemetery. His first wife, Ruth Masters Rickover (1903-1972) is buried with him and his second wife, Eleanore A. Bednowicz Rickover (Capt. USN – retired (1930 – 2021) is also buried in Arlington. Eleanore was also sponsor of the USS Hyman Rickover SSN 795.
