November 8, 1944 – Wallace Seth Manning MM2. along with shipmate Henry Edward Rhodes SN – – USS Growler (SS-215) SS 215 left Freemantle on her eleventh and last war patrol on October 20, 1944 in a ‘wolf pack’ that included Hake SS 256 and Hardhead SS 365. Intercepting an enemy convoy on November 8th, Growler gave the order to attack. Hake and Hardhead both heard what sounded like torpedo and depth charge explosions on Growler’s side of the convoy. All efforts to contact Growler failed, 86 were killed all hands lost; speculation was Growler was either depth charged or struck by her own torpedo. Rhodes was from Cambridge, Idaho, and Manning from Wilder, Idaho
